Title: The Hostile Hospital
Author: Lemony Snicket
Series: A Series of Unfortunate Events, #8
Format: Kindle
Rating: ★★☆☆☆

Previously:

Something novel happens. No seriously! Something changes. Is it enough to make the books any better? ...no, not really. But hey, hey. The formula has been altered.

This time, the Baudelaire orphans don't have a guardian to go to because they're hiding from the law. Everyone still thinks they're murderers from the last book, so it's not like they can just go to Mr. Poe and get a new guardian. (Besides, I can't quite see why they would want to.)

So instead, they end up being hospital volunteers to try and figure out the overarching plot. Apparently the hospital records department keeps records on things such as the fire that killed their parents. We also get a cryptic hint that there might have been a survivor.

But overall, this is basically the same book, while being different. Count Olaf shows up, with a plan to steal the Baudelaire fortune, involving a disguise and murdering one of them. The narrator is annoying. The book tries to be clever, but falls short. The Baudelaires end up fine.

I'm back to bored, if not upset at this point. So that's something. Maybe the formula alteration really did make things a touch better.
